To maintain the proper dates (I'm a pedant that way), I've been backdating my entries to around the time they actually occurred, rather than when I wrote them up (since I rarely get round to writing them up till some time later - I realise that this makes it a TiVo journal, rather than a live journal).

Is this a good idea? I've not been using the "backdate" option, so new entries (even if backdated) should appear at the top of other peoples' friends lists (if they list me as a friend). I do list the date posted at the bottom. However, if you look for new entries among my "recent postings", you might miss some (of course, that may be for the best).

It's absolutely your call :) Personally I prefer that you continue not to use the backdate option as I have quite a lot of friends and so tend not to visit individual pages/scan old entries but it's all about what you want from your journal.

I agree, it's best to leave off the "backdate" option. I just wanted to check that it wasn't inconvenient to use old dates on the entries.

Thanks for the advice [livejournal.com profile] tinyjo!
