This thing was a fully portable phone, not a radio handset for your normal phone. It allows him to call or (even cooler) be called wherever he is within the city (doesn't work far outside because of the range of the antennas, I think). Unfortunately you can't use a fuel cell like the sort that powers most cars these days (those are far too bulky), so the NiCad battery only lasts about an hour.
Was this the sort of thing that Mark has? If so, maybe I won't have to drool over tech on the plane, but just drool at Mark (as it were :-) )
