I had an interesting dream last night. OK, maybe not that interesting (and certainly not up to the standards of a
cleanskies' dream), but it did lend itself to interpretation very readily (as well as being repeatable, also unusual).
In the dream I woke up in my old college (Lonsdale) and I knew that today was the day of my exam. Oddly enough, I was taking an O-level in film studies (can one do an O-level in film studies?) - I don't know why I was doing an O-level at University. Typically for an exam panic dream, I hadn't done any studying, and had a few hours to bone up on the entire course. Atypically, I wasn't really bothered about it. I thought it might be nice to put in a few hours' study so as not to do too badly, but I'd already taken several exams (one in Latin, IIRC) with minimal study, and was so laid back that I hadn't even checked the results which had been out for some time (I thought it would be a fine idea to do that as I went into schools).
I felt sure I could wing it on most of the course (2001 and Blade Runner, probably), but might have to bone up a bit on some of the early black and white films, which I now realised I'd watched very few of. By this time, I kept on switching off the alarm, not because I was really enjoying myself in this dream, but because I knew I needed more study so I wouldn’t make too much a fool of myself. Of course if one wakes up, then all opportunity for further study is gone.
Anyway, I think this might refer to my promotion board. I was pretty scared last time I had one of these, and managed a spectacularly embarrassing gaffe (a Z decay mode that violated most conservations laws known to man) - but otherwise did fine (I don't think they liked my total lack of management skills, but I was rather proud of that) and got the promotion. This time round, I don't really care whether I get promoted, but just thought it was about bloody time they put me up for it. They will probably spend most of the time quizzing me on various aspects of computing. That's like the film studies - something I enjoy doing anyway, but would be embarrassing if I got a basic question wrong (confusing "it's a wonderful life" and "life is beautiful"; or OSI and TCP/IP stacks). Maybe the dream was telling me that it mightn't be a bad idea to do a little preparation for the interview. Just a little.
